II. Accessible Libraries Workshop was held at the Republic of Türkiye Presidential National Library on 16-17 May 2022


In order to make libraries, one of the most important sources of information, “accessible to everyone”, II. Accessible Libraries Workshop was held at the Republic of Türkiye Presidential National Library ON 16-17 May 2022.

As part of the Disability Week, “II. Accessible Libraries Workshop”, hosted by the Presidential National Library on 16-17 May 2022, was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Family and Social Services (General Directorate of Services for Persons with Disabilities and the Elderly), the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (General Directorate of Libraries and Publications), Manisa Celal Bayar University, Aydın Adnan Menderes University and the Türkiye Accessible Informatics Platform.

In the workshop, which was opened with the participation of the Minister of Family and Social Services, Derya YANIK, the Flags with the Accessibility Logo were given by the Minister YANIK to 16 public libraries, which were entitled to receive the Accessibility Certificate in 2022, as well as to the university and municipal libraries.

Three sessions were held on the first day of the workshop. During the opening panel, presentations were made on the studies on access to information carried out by the Ministry of Family and Social Services, General Directorate of Services for Persons with Disabilities and the Elderly, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Libraries and Publications, the General Directorate of Copyrights and the Council of Higher Education.

In the second and third sessions on Good Practice Examples, in addition to the presentations on "Activities for the Persons with Disabilities in the National Library", "New Approaches in Library", "Talking Library" and " Assistive Technology and Education Laboratory for Individuals with Visual Disabilities (GETEM)". )”, “Istanbul University-Accessible Information Centre”, “Accessible Music Library”, “Accessible Digital Mathematics Library Project” and “The First Accessible Documented Library: Isparta Halil Hamit Paşa Provincial Public Library” were discussed.

On the second day of the workshop, face-to-face and online workshop sessions were held. During 2 face-to-face and 2 online sessions, the opinions and suggestions of the participants were received on the identification of problems in accessible libraries and on short, medium and long-term solutions for the accessibility of library services. The program, which also included Republic of Türkiye Presidential National Library Trip, ended with the Workshop Evaluation Meeting attended by the representatives of the workshop organizer institutions.

On the second day of the workshop, in addition to the workshop sessions, online training seminars were given simultaneously with the sessions. 776 of the relevant public institutions and organizations participated in the training titled "Accessibility", which includes the importance of accessibility, legislation and implementation criteria, carried out by the Ministry of Family and Social Services, General Directorate of Services for Persons with Disabilities and the Elderly; 525 people participated in the training titled “Communication with Persons with Disabilities.”
