The Seminar on Elderly and Individuals with Disabilities in the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was held in the United Arab Emirates


We participated in the “Seminar on Elderly and Individuals with Disabilities in OIC Member Countries” held by the Islamic Countries Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre affiliated to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was established to strengthen cooperation and solidarity in many different policy and service fields among its Member States, continues its activities in this direction. Türkiye, which has been a member of the OIC since its establishment, takes an active role within the scope of its activities. Permanent Representation of Türkiye was opened in Jeddah on July 24, 2015, after the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 22 May 2014 to establish a Permanent Representation to the OIC.

It has been observed that the basic cooperation with the OIC has intensified in the fields of social policies and social services in recent years. In this area, our country's experiences within the scope of demographic transformation and population aging process, its competence in care systems, services for elderly and individuals with disabilities within the scope of inclusive social policies are introduced. As a result of the promotions, Türkiye was invited to the "Seminar on Elderly and Individuals with Disabilities in OIC Member Countries" held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on December 2, 2021. Rumeysa CEYLAN, Assistant ASH Expert, working at the General Directorate of Services for Persons with Disabilities and Elderly, Department of Elderly Welfare, attended the meeting.

At the event within the scope of EXPO 2020, Elderly Care and Disability Care Policies in Türkiye and Services for Elderly and Individuals with Disabilities were Provided

 Representatives of OIC member countries and international organizations in the fields of old age and disability participated in the event held within the scope of EXPO 2020. In the seminar, the participants representing organizations such as the Islamic Countries Statistics, Economic and Social Research and Education Centre and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for West Asia made presentations on the OIC and Arab countries in the West Asian region. As a country example, a presentation was made in which the elderly and disability care policies in Türkiye and services for the elderly and individuals with disabilities were introduced. In the presentation, sub-headings related to many fields in which services are provided in our country, from vision documents for old age and disability, inpatient long-term care, day care and home care services, to old age and disability within the scope of social assistance and social security system, were discussed.

The Applicability of the Elderly Care System in Our Country to Other Islamic Cooperation Member States was Discussed

 Within the scope of the seminar, ASH Assistant Specialist Rumeysa CEYLAN discussed the processes of old age and disability in our country with a demographic approach during her presentation titled "Elderly Care and Disability Care Policies in Türkiye". She gave information about the policies and service offerings developed for the elderly and persons with disabilities in our country. Answering the questions about the content of the system established especially in the field of elderly care in our country and how this system can be established in other OIC countries, CEYLAN expressed the situation of cooperation between public institutions and organizations, non-governmental organizations, private sector and other actors in the field through our existing systems.
